These three months are perhaps the most difficult of any through the year. We are transitioning between heavy use Spring to one of our hottest, driest times of the year. Many of our residents are preparing to go up North and may have some questions as to what they have to do to prepare their pool.

 When the daytime temperatures reach 90 degrees and above, we find the evaporation rate increases substantially and even an inch or more per week is not out of line. As the daytime temperatures increase, so does the temperature of your pool water. When this occurs several things can happen; one is that if the filtration is not 100%, while sufficient in cooler weather, can in warmer water cause a sudden and dramatic algae bloom. It is not all that unusual for the water to turn green literally overnight. If this happens, the chemistry should be checked and if it is in normal range, it may be time to check the filter element for age and wear. Replace if necessary. Keep in mind; a paper cartridge element has a life expectancy of 1-3 years. If yours is older than this, consider replacing it. Another cause for green pools is when we do get a heavy rain, it not only dilutes the chemicals in the pool but it can introduce a considerable amount of organics that the algae seem to thrive on.
